Rebbe Tarfon told the Rabbis that once when he was traveling, he lay down to say the Evening Shema. He wanted to do what Bet Shamai said. But he almost was killed by bandits roaming the roads.
The Rabbis said it was his own fault. He should never have gone against the words of Bet Hillel.
