Rabban Shimon Ben Gamliel (the first) was the son of Rabban Gamliel haZaken.  He was the last nasi before the destruction of the Second Beit haMikdash.  Obviously, he lived in a terrible time of war and suffering because of the evil Romans.  He, himself, was killed fighting against the Romans.  He was followed as Nasi by Rabban Gamliel the Second.
