Rabban Gamliel the Second
was the son of
Rabban Shimon. He learned
Torah both from his father and from Rabban Yochanan Ben Zakkai. Rabban
Yochanan ben Zakkai was the "temporary" Nasi until Rabban Gamliel the Second was
old enough to take over (Remember, Rabban Shimon was killed fighting the
Romans.). Rabban Gamliel served as Nasi in Yavneh.
Rabban Gamliel was a wealthy man, and even owned land around Yavneh. He had friends among the Roman leaders.
Famous Tana'im in his generation included Rav Eliezer Ben Hurkenos, Rav Elezar Ben Azaria, Rav Yehoshua ben Beteyra, Rav Elezar ben Arach, Rabbi Akiva and Rabbi Yishmael.
