www.bonayich.comRabban Gamliel haZaken (the Elder) was the grandson of Hillel. He was the Nasi. His Sanhedrin was in Yerushalayim (outside of Bet haMikdash). He was a fantastic expert not only in Jewish Law, but also in languages, science and philosophy. He died twenty years before the destruction of the Second Beit haMikdash.
His son Rabban Shimon followed him as head of the Sanhedrin, and served until the destruction of the Second Beit haMikdash.
Other Tana'im in his generation included Rav Yochanan Ben Zakkai, Rav Chanina Ben Dosa and Rav Tzadok.
