For centuries the prophetic vision "Ki
Mitzion Tetze Torah" promised that the light of the Torah would spread
from Zion to the rest of the world. Today unique perspectives of Torah
issue forth from the halls of learning of the Hesder Yeshivot in
Medinat Yisrael (State of Israel). This "Torat Tzion" inspires those
of us in Galut (Diaspora) to develop a profound commitment to Torah
and to cultivate a real relationship with Israel. Through this process
we are invigorated and motivated to assume the responsibilities of a
people who have been returned to our land and to fulfill our role as
leaders among the nations.
The first outpost for Torat Tzion anywhere outside the State of
Israel is the Torat Tzion Kollel, housed in the Bet Midrash (House of
Study) of Fuchs Bet Sefer Mizrachi. Established in 1993 with the
cooperation of
Yeshivat Har Etzion, the Torat Tzion Kollel has spawned
at least five other kollelim in the United States and South Africa and
has generated interest in establishing more kollelim in America and
around the world.
Locally the Kollel’s impact on our lives has been profound. The
Rabbis teach Judaics to our children, and teach by example, as they
pursue their own studies for hours each day in the Bet Midrash. The
Rosh Kollel (Kollel Director) and Kollel fellows, their wives, and
families are our role models. They have become integral members of our
school and shuls, our camp, and Bnei Akiva youth groups. They have
intensified and authenticated community celebrations for Yom Hazikaron
(Memorial Day), Yom Ha’atzmaut (Independence Day), and Yom
Yerushalayim (Jerusalem Day). They have created an umbilical link
between us and the religious Zionist community in Israel, and they
have created a distinctive educational experience in every setting.
Every Sunday morning, nearly seventy parents, students, and rabbis
join for prayer and learning. On Tuesday evening in the Women’s Bet Midrash, women
teach women of varying Judaic backgrounds to actively explore the
mystery and excitement of traditional Jewish texts. Throughout the
week there are informal chevrutot, studying in partners, with the
Kollel rabbis as both models and teachers. Throughout the year there
are special events such as panel discussions, guest speakers, and
holiday lectures.
The Torat Tzion Kollel came into being as has been sustained
through the vision and generosity of Bob and Marla Stark. The Kollel
has become a vital component of all we hope to accomplish.
