Haifa
Find the city of Haifa on the map of Israel. You will see that it sticks out of the country and that it is on the Mediterranean Ocean. It forms a bay. Here is a picture of the bay.:

The Talmud mentions that Haifa was a fishing village. Since that time, it has become Israel’s biggest port. A port is a place on the water where ships come. Some come with metals and other materials to make things. Some come with food. Some ships come with passengers (people). The Israeli Navy also has many ships in the port. |
Many people who came on aliyah to Israel first set foot on the soil of Eretz Yisrael in Haifa. The port also became famous because when some Jews were caught by the British trying to enter Israel (before Israel became a Jewish State), Haifa was the only place in Israel they got to see. They were sent to prison camps from Haifa port to places like Cyprus (which is an island in the Mediterranean Sea). |

Many different kinds of people from different religions have lived in Israel. When Israel became a country, many of the Arabs who lived in Haifa refused to live in a Jewish Country and thousands of them left. |

Mount Carmel is one of the world’s most beautiful mountains. It is mentioned many times in the Bible. It was the place where the Prophet Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal and won. He showed everyone that there is only one God. |

Just like in
big cities in the U.S., different people live in different types of places
in Haifa. In the city, most people live in apartments. In the
suburbs and places further from town (like the Carmel area), there are more
houses. |
