1) You will research and write a two to three page research paper about an important person during the Revolutionary War era (time period). In your very well written paper, you will tell about the person’s life AND why he or she was important during this time period. The paper must be typed (12 point, double spaced). You will then present a two to three minute oral report to the class (You will be cut off after four minutes.). You may use your paper, index cards or notes for the oral report. If you choose, you may bring visual aids (like pictures, posters, etc.). But it is not required.

2) You must use AT LEAST four sources…one reference book (like an encyclopedia or almanac), one primary source, one secondary source (that is not a reference book) and one on-line source. Take a look at my list of helpful web sites since you can also find your primary source and reference books there.

3) In order to help you do this, you will use the research notebook. There are five steps prior to turning in the final draft. Every step is required. Click here to download this notebook.

4) Though we will use SOME class time, this is primarily a homework assignment. This is a major assignment and a BIG GRADE! At the end of this notebook you will see exactly how you will be graded.

CHALLENGE ASSIGNMENT:

Would you like to do a biography about someone after 1900? How about a baseball player? I hereby offer a CHALLENGE ASSIGNMENT!

“DOUBLE THE FUN”: You can do a double length assignment…4-6 pages using 7 sources (at least 2 primary, 2 secondary, 1 reference and 2 on-line) and give a four to six minute report. You use the same research notebook as everyone else. You must have my approval (I will only approve “B+” or better level writers!) and write about one of the following.:

“Dizzy” Dean and baseball during the Depression

Bob Feller and baseball during World War Two

The All American Girls’ Baseball League and World War II

Jackie Robinson and the integration of baseball

Satchel Paige and Negro League baseball

For the challenge assignment ONLY, I will consider other topics of interest to you as long as they are about an important person and issue in American history (e.g. Martin Luther King and Civil Rights). The decision of the Rabbi/Umpire is final. J
