ECONOMY

When we talk about the economy of a country, we are talking about how people in the country make money.  We are also talking about how the country makes money (so that it can help its people).

Israel is a modern (meaning up-to-date) country, very much like the United States.  Israel has doctors, lawyers, business people, teachers, cab drivers, soldiers, secretaries and almost every other job you can imagine.  It also has many people working in "High Tech."  "High Tech" is the term used for high technology--computers (like the one you are using to read this book), software (computer programs), internet connections (which lets you get this book on your computer), etc., etc., etc.

Of course, even though Israel is in some ways like every other modern country, it is also one of a kind.

A major business in Israel is tourism.  Tourists are people who come to visit a place.  Since Israel is so rich in religion and history, many people from all over the world take trips to Israel.  They come to see things that they have read about in the Bible and in history books, or perhaps to visit family and friends.  Some go to Israel to study in a Yeshiva, seminary or university for a year (or more). Many fly El Al Airlines- the first Jewish airlines in the world!

Another major business in Israel is agriculture.  Agriculture means farming.  In Israel, many people work on large farms and orchards.  They grow oranges, dates and lots of other fruits and vegetables.  Often, they are exported (which means sent to another country).  Maybe you have even seen Israeli fruits or vegetables in your grocery store!  Jaffa oranges are really famous.

In Israel, the money they use is the Shekel Chadash- New Israeli Shekel. Israelis use paper money as well as coins- and, of course, credit cards- when they go shopping.
