..a weekly community building
experience
Our entire Lower School meets every Friday morning at 10:45. As the
shofar blows, the children stand to sing "Hatikva" and the "Star
Sprangled Banner."
Like many Erev Shabbat programs in Jewish Day Schools, there are
then words of Torah and a variety of performances. But what is
unique is that much of the program is led by the Lower School students
themselves.
Students lead the meeting, always starting with their own Divrei
Torah and questions about the Parsha or upcoming Chag. They call
on the various performers. Sometimes, these are guests from
outside our school who come as part of assembly programs. Often,
however, they are our students. They may be classes with skits
before Jewish or American holidays. Sometimes, they are
individual or small groups of students with a song, skit, or talent to
share. Children watch their schoolmates sing, act, hula hoops,
do comedy routines, play an instrument, etc., etc. This teaches
everyone involved respect for others' hard work and talents. Of
course, the performers also learn to become comfortable expressing
themselves in front of others.
We then have a special "I Noticed Notes" raffle, where students are
recognized for showing outstanding Middot in school. This allows
us to highlight acts of kindness, responsibility or respect noticed
not only by faculty members- but by children.
After announcements, the leaders then dismiss each class in the
Lower School (using the Hebrew or Judaic oriented name the class has
voted upon).
Our Lower School Community Meeting is a large part of what makes us
truly a community. It is a place for students to learn
leadership, mutual respect and sharing, and is always a highlight of
the week.
