There are seven kinds of relatives one must sit shiva for, and who one therefore has an obligation to make sure they are properly buried.
They are:
spouse (husband or wife)
mother
father
son
daughter
brother
sister
The reason we say KINDS of relatives is that one may have many children, brothers or sisters. Therefore, one could have to sit shiva many more than seven times.
