A Message from the College Guidance Department

Welcome back! While I know students are still adjusting to the new school year, I’m here to (gently) get you thinking about standardized tests and college admissions. Here are some college planning notes for this year:

  • My student meeting times this year will be Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9:00am-3:30PM in Office 2513. Students can book an appointment online by selecting the “schedule an appointment’ tab on our FB page (Fuchs Mizrachi College Guidance) or visiting this site. Of course, they are also welcome to drop in anytime that I am available.
  • To access the college guidance handbook, PPTs of presentations, a list of internship opportunities, and other resources, please head to the college guidance page on the Mizrachi website.

9th Graders

9th graders, welcome! Your job this year is to concentrate on doing well in school. Grades are the most important part of any college application. In addition, start a folder of accomplishments (grade reports, awards, prizes, team memberships, leadership positions, jobs). Maintain this folder through 12th grade. It is invaluable when preparing a resume.

Freshmen are strongly encouraged to take our free school-administered practice ACT on Sunday, December 4th, 2016.

10th Graders

Sophomores, welcome back. Start thinking about the PSAT (practice SAT), which you can choose to take on Wednesday, November 2nd. The test is intended for juniors, but sophomores can take it so they become familiar with standardized testing. See the junior section below for more information.

I also plan on going into the 10th grade this spring to work on resumes, the college search process, and using the Myers Briggs Interest Inventory. This is a great introduction into your life after Mizrachi: work, college, year abroad, army, etc.

Plan on pushing yourself this year so you can take honors and APs next year! Please feel free to check in with me at any time. We will hold our 10th Grade College Guidance Night on Tuesday, March 7th at 7:30PM to talk about standardized testing and (slowly) beginning the college application process.

Sophomores are strongly encouraged to take our free school-administered practice ACT on Sunday, December 4th, 2016.

11th Graders

You are now in the second half of your high school years here at Mizrachi. Our goal is to help prepare you for the next step in your life, which will be happening before you know it!

We will have optional PSAT testing on Wednesday, November 2nd. The PSAT is a test that will help you measure your critical reading, writing, and math skills and help you become familiar with the SAT. There is scholarship money available to students who score well on this test. While most of our students currently opt to take the ACT for college admissions, the PSAT can help you determine if the SAT is the best fit for you.

Juniors are strongly encouraged to take our free school-administered practice ACT on Sunday, December 4th, 2016.

I am always happy to meet with juniors to answer questions about standardized testing. Please make sure you meet with me in January or February to discuss your senior year schedule and life after high school. We will start college admissions workshops in the spring to talk about essays, interviews, and narrowing down your college lists. I will also reach out at that point to schedule family meetings.

Parents and students, mark your calendars for Monday, February 6th, 2017 at 7:30PM. This will be our College Overview for Juniors. We hope you will join us. In addition, Thursday, November 3rd at 7:30 will be our College Financial Aid Information Night. Many junior parents attend this presentation to get a head start on financial aid planning.

We will have several college visits this year. Many schools and dates have not yet been finalized, but the following have been confirmed:

Binghamton: 9/9 at 11:30AM

IDC:  9/12 at 12 PM

YU: 9/20 at 10:00AM

Tel Aviv University: 9/30 at 11 AM

Our juniors and seniors have also been invited to the following events so far:

NYU Cleveland reception – Sunday, October 9th at 2pm @ Renaissance Cleveland Hotel

Washington Univ. in St Louis presentation – Sunday, October 23rd at 7pm @ Cleveland Marriott East

Finally, start thinking about registering for the ACT or SAT test. You can register for the SAT at www.collegeboard.org and for the ACT at www.ACTstudent.org. We encourage you to pick a date now (December, February and/or April for ACT, January, March and/or May for SAT). Note that ACTs in December, February, and April are given at Mizrachi. Other Sunday ACTs are offered at Case Western Reserve University. Sunday SATs are offered at JFSA.

12th Graders

Welcome back to your final year of high school! This year will fly by before you know it, so we want to make sure you are prepared. Every senior should make an appointment to meet with me as soon as possible; parents are welcome as well.

At this meeting we will go over what you should be doing in the next few months.

Our goal is that you will be finalizing your list of schools that you are interested in; asking two teachers for recommendation letters; and turning your summer essay drafts into well-written personal statements. I am happy to help you every step of the way.

This year, recommendation letters, applications, and transcripts will all be processed through Naviance. I will hold a Naviance Q & A for seniors on Friday, 9/16 to review the ins and outs of this process. Parents, remember that you can login to Naviance as well. The link is here. Access codes were emailed last spring; please reach out to Kathleen if you need the email re-sent.

Seniors are encouraged to attend the Northeast Ohio Suburban College Fair, Thursday, October 13th, at John Carroll University. Note that this fair typically has representatives from local colleges (such as Case) as well as many commonly attended by Mizrachi grads such as UMich, Rutgers, and OSU.

We will have several college visits this year. Many schools and dates have not yet been finalized, but the following have been confirmed:

Finally, parents and seniors, please jot down the following dates, as these events will help you in the college process. Wednesday, September 14th at 8:30PM will be our Senior College Overview Night and Thursday, November 3rd at 7:30 will be our Financial Aid Information Night.

These meetings are a must if you have never been through this process, or if it has been a while since a family member went through it.

I am looking forward to a great year!  If there is anything I can do to help you or your son or daughter this year, please don't hesitate to contact me.
