MISHNA BRACHOT
Chapter 1, Mishna 4

I'm back to talk about the b'rachot of Kriat Shema!

In the morning, there are are two blessings before Shema and one blessing after.
In the evening, there are two before and two after.
In both the evening and morning, there is one short and one long blessing before Shema.
If the siddur says to make a long blessing, you are not allowed to turn it into a short one.
If the siddur says to make a short blessing, you can't make it a long one.
And if it says to end it with "Baruch Attah Hashem," you can't leave this out.
But if it says to leave it out, you can't add it in!
(Basically, you can't change the b'rachot in the Siddur--not now, and not ever!)
