MISHNA BRACHOT

Chapter 1, Mishna 1

The first two chapters of Messechet Brachot focus on the the Mitzvah of Kriat Shema.  The mitzvah is to say Shema "when you lie down and when you get up"--the evening and the morning.  We are now going to learn what time is considered to be evening.

Start saying the evening Shema at the time when the Kohanim go in to eat their Terumah.

WHEN IS THAT?

I am Rabbi Eliezer.  I say that you have to end the evening Shema by the end of the first watch (This is the first third of the night.).

The Chachamim say that you have until Chatzot (the middle of the night) to end the evening Shema.

I am Rabban Gamliel, and I say that you have until the very beginning of sunup to end the evening Shema!  Once, my sons came home from a simcha, and it was after chatzot.  They told me that they hadn't yet said Kriat Shema.  I told them that they MUST read it!  As a matter of fact, any time the Chachamim say that you have until chatzot (such as for burning or eating certain Korbanot), you really have until the very beginning of sun up. (This means there is NOT a disagreement between Rabban Gamliel and the Chachamim!)
